However, the reality behind this event was different. The objective of removing these children was to introduce them to Anglo values and work habits." The rationale was to stop the passing of language, identity, cultural values to the children by their biological parents and communities such that they could be employed by the colonial settlers (Nsdc.org.au, n.d.). Children with one of the parents being white and other Indigenous were mainly targeted for this purpose. It was also believed by the Aboriginal protection boards that the outcome of this separation would be a successful assimilation of these isolated children into white society. It gave them great hopes that it would easily help in merging the mixed indigenous people with the white population (Nsdc.org.au, n.d.). However, this attempt was mainly to wipe out the Aboriginal race completely leaving only the whites. A stated by McKeich, (2006), in 1915, the Aborigines Protection Amending Act enabled taking Indigenous children away from their families neglecting the same maltreatment and negligence that they would experience any way. The act managed to remove children without the court order and parental consent. The member of the parliament of New South Wales Mr. McGarry objected this act in 1915 and described the policy as stealing the child away from its parents." It was later in 1997 that the Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission initiated a national inquiry into this separation. In 1997, the findings of this inquiry were released as Bringing Them Home (McKeich, 2006). The findings revealed many cases of forceful removal of Indigenous children from their families and communities. These findings thus led to the emergence of the term The Stolen Generations that describes the stories shared by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The Indigenous children (half-caste) who were removed were known as the "stolen generations." Throughout this period of stolen generations, every night the children were removed from their family leaving their families horified. Later the report referred to the term as forcible removal policies (McKeich, 2006). It was estimated that between 1883-1969, in NSW alone more than 60,000 children were stolen, however, there were hardly any records found of them according to Korff, (2014). The past child removal policy has s till had its effect on the Indigenous communities. They are present as either first, second or third generation member of the Stolen Generations. In 2008, Mr. Kevin Rudd the Prime Minister of Australia had apologized for stolen generation in front of the nation. Although the Indigenous Australians of the Stolen Generations accepted the apology, it neither repaired their broken hearts nor their issues. This affected population needs more support and initiatives from the nation (Davenport-West, 2009). There is wide range of challenges faced by the members of the Stolen Generations which greatly impacts their life. Children who are taken away from their family experiences trauma. These people do not come forward due to confusion, shame, and sense of not being cared. The other reason includes family and friends who lack awareness and find difficult to be open about their grief and do not prefer to dig into the past (Davenport-West, 2009). There are reports of many children experiencing psychological issues after being the victim of physical and sexual abuse by the caregivers. These greatly affect the mental health of the children thus, preventing them from coming forward (Davenport-West, 2009). There are range of factors that determines the impact of the child abuse including the existing relationship between the abuser/s and the child, type and severity of abuse, family environment of the child, the relationship between the child and the parents or other caregivers, and if any hist ory of child abuse or care, support and love (Asca.org.au, n.d). Children with experiences of abuse are found to have common psychological effects in adulthood, which are anxiety, depression, aggression and violence. According to Asca.org.au, (n.d) members of the stolen generations are highly vulnerable to these effects. As per Davenport-West, (2009) the Indigenous children and families of the stolen generations are deprived of accurate records about their marriage, birth, adoption, and other government records. Without the birth certificate, it is difficult for an individual to prove own identity. This prevents them from accessing certain services and support existing in their favor. Also, the incomplete and missing records make it difficult for the parents and children of the stolen generations to search for their lost heritage, community and family members. Even if some members return, they are highly likely to be rejected because of their poor knowledge related to Aboriginal language, community, and cultural values. Therefore, it becomes difficult for them to fit in their culture like any other stranger and are unaccepted (Davenport-West, 2009). The impact of child removal is not only limited to the first-degree relatives rather several generations. Many generations feel the pain and trauma such as families, children, grandchildren and communities. Children raised in foster homes and those who were institutionalized were found to unable to raise their children with affection and love. Since they were always devoid of compassion and warmth, they failed to bring their children appropriately (Davenport-West, 2009). The Indigenous Australians are more likely to ha ve poor physical and mental health when compared to the non-Indigenous Australians. The chronic illnesses that are highly prevalent among the Aboriginals are heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, drug and alcohol abuse, higher rates of smoking and premature birth. Social Stratification and Class Discuss what is meant by social stratification and evaluate the different ways that social class has been defined and measured. The term social stratification refers to the grouping of social classes within a society. This is a specific form of inequality, and the effect of this is that certain groups in society are seen as having a higher status or rank than others based on power and wealth. Social stratification works by society ranking which is based in four sections. Social stratification can be passed from one generation to the next, i.e. royalty, it is universal but varies over time and place, it is a trait of society not individual differences and lastly social stratification also goes on beliefs and not just inequality (Wikipedia, 2014). Sociologists argue that some form of social stratification occurs in every society in the world despite that everyone claims to want an equal society (Burton, 2013). Sociologists consider there to be three main systems of stratification in today’s societies. These are slavery, the caste system and the class system. Slavery has legally been abolished in many countries but there is still evidence of at least 400 million people living under conditions that amount to slavery. For those living in Sudan, Ghana, India, Pakistan, and many other countries with similar ideals, slavery is a common thing to happen and in certain parts of Asia sex slavery is also common. A caste system is a social system built on ascribed status. This is a status based on characteristics a person is born with, such as race, gender, religion, age etc. In a caste system there is no chance to change from one caste to another and marriage outside of a person’s caste is not generally permitted. Often in a caste system the marriages are pre-arranged between parents rather than a choice of the individual. A class system is a social system built on achieved status. This is status that a person either earns or chooses so is not dependent on where a person was born or a person’s parentage. Those born in a class system c an choose their education, career and partner. A person in a class system may also start off in one class but can move between classes (Spark Notes, n.d). For many sociologists the focus is on the caste and class systems of stratification and the amount of social mobility within that system. This social mobility is the ease of which a person can move up or down the class system and will be based on a person’s wealth or power. In modern western societies, stratification is organised by class and divided into three main layers, upper class, middle class and lower class. Each of these classes can then be broken down into further categories determined by things such as housing locations (Wikipedia, 2014). A person’s social class will depend on where they are from, what they do for a living, where they achieved their education, who they are connected to and how powerful them people may be, how much wealth they have and their position in society. When a person’s social class is being considered their education will not generally be considered, unless of course they attended a high ranking education facility. This person will also need to have some high connections to be considered for upper class status. If a person is lacking any of these factors they will be considered as middle or even lower class, depending on their postcode or bank balance, within a western society. In modern western societie s there are different categories for social stratification such as age, race, gender, class, race or disability and in some places there will be even more categories (Wikipedia, 2014). Social classification has taken place long before the modern form of classifying people began. Social stratification has been measured in different forms; from asking people which class they feel they belong in to using a person’s postcode. The two most used measures are both based on occupation. The Registrar General’s Standard Occupation Classification (SC) and the Socio-Economic Groups (SEG). The SC began in has been in the census since 1901 and is based on a person’s occupation which will fall into one of six categories: Professional, Intermediate, Skilled (Non-Manual/Manual), Partly Skilled and Unskilled. This is an ordinal measure that ranks occupation, by skill and social standing. The SEG is made up of 17 different categories and would in fact cover all eventualities of employment, house worker, student etc. This is a nominal measure that ranks occupation by employment status (Anon, n.d). The SC has strengths as well as weaknesses with its use. It is a simple system with easily generalizable categories. This system is also useful when wanting to compare the changes in occupations held over a period of time. However, this system does not appear to group people it focuses more on the occupation. Another problem with this system is that the categories do not consider the differences in income between certain occupations. The SEC also has some strengths and weaknesses to its reliability in measuring class. Its main strength is that it does have a wider range of categories for people to consider, however its biggest weakness is that is still fails to acknowledge certain people, such as women, students and the unemployed (Sociology Org, 2013). Having more than one way of measuring social class has caused many problems. As occupations have changed dramatically over the years there are many problems with the way the SC and the SEG measures class. The biggest of the problems is that they are not designed to measure the occupations of women, housewives, students or even the unemployed adequately. Although this will generally be the most reliable as people will accept what is told to them by a government body such as the Registrar General. In 1994 a government review of social classifications took place with the aim to review the reliability of using occupation to measure social class, to review the social class categories and to assess the effectiveness of the changes made. These changes took place in 1998 and a new classification system, NS-SEC, was introduced beginning in the 2001 census (Anon, n.d). This change made to the way occupation is measured comes in eight categories to include the differences in set locations. The categories of the NS-SEC are: higher managerial and professionals, lower managerial and professionals, intermediate occupations (clerical, sales and services), small employers and own account workers, lower supervisory and technical occupations, semi-routine occupations, routine occupations and never worked or long term unemployed (Wikipedia, 2013). Summary and Analysis of The Prioress' Tale (The Canterbury Tales) The Prioress' Tale: The Prioress tells a tale set in an Asian town dominated by the Jewry in which usury and other things hateful to Christ occurred. The Christian minority in the town opened a school for their children in this city. Among these children was a widow's son, an angelic seven year old who was, even at his young age, deeply devoted to his faith. At school he learned a song in Latin, the Alma redemptoris, and asked the meaning of it. According to an older student, this song was meant to praise the Virgin Mary. As he was walking home from school one day singing this song, he provoked the anger of the Jews of the city, whose hearts were possessed by Satan. They hired a murderer who slit the boys' throat and threw the body into a cesspool. The widow searched for her missing child, begging the Jews to tell her where her child might be found, but they refuse to help. When she found him, although his throat was slit, he began to sing the Alma redemptoris. The other Christians of the city rushed to the child and carried him to the abbey. The local provost cursed the Jews who knew of this murder and ordered their death by hanging. Before the child was buried, he began to speak. The Virgin Mary had placed a pearl on his tongue that allowed him to speak, despite his fatal wound, but when the pearl was removed he would finally pass on to heaven. The story ends with a lament for the young child and a curse on the Jews who perpetrated this crime. Analysis The Prioress' Tale is overtly a religious tale centered around Christian principles and a devotion to the Virgin Mary, but within the warm affection that the Prioress shows for her Christian faith is a disquieting anti-Semitism that will be immediately obvious to the modern reader. The tale is an overwrought melodrama, replete with scenes of such banal sentimentalism and simplistic moral instruction. The tale is an unabashed celebration of motherhood. The guiding figure of the tale is the Virgin Mary, who serves as the exemplar for Christian values and the intervening spirit who sustains the murdered child before he passes on to heaven. Her mortal parallel is the mother of the murdered boy, who dearly loves her son and struggles to find the boy when he is lost.
